About

Kieran Haslett – Moore

I live in the lee of Hemi Matenga in Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand in a cosy wee 1970’s semi detached house with a boisterous fox terrier called Ruby. I hail from South Wellington and my heart still belongs to the rugged Cook Strait lashed south coast. I am one of those pinko liberal lefties , more Gueuze than Champagne socialist.

Beer

I am the head brewer and one of the owners of North End Brewery , a small craft brewery attached to smokehouse restaurant Salt and Wood Collective and related by ownership with the garden based restaurant Long Beach Tavern and sourdough specialist Olde Beach Bakery. I love traditional British and Belgian Brewing and draw much inspiration from the beers of Europe. The latest hazy offers no interest to me.

Cider

I love cider and cider brandy / calvedos almost as much as beer. I am planting a wee home cider orchard .

Food

I am happiest in the kitchen. I love cooking, pickling and preserving for the people I love . I’m a former cheesemonger having cared for the cheeses at Moore Wilsons in a former life. I love the food writing of Nigel Slater , Rick Stein, Hugh Fearnly Whittingstall and of course Clarissa Dickson Wright and Jennifer Paterson. I cook robust hearty food , I’m not flash at plating and its definitely not for the gramers.

Music

I played in a couple of post hardcore bands in the late 90’s early 00’s. I love a wide range of music with a focus on heavy dark and ambient sounds. The name of this website comes from a Neurosis song.

Travel

I read a lot of travel writing, Bill Bryson, Joe Bennett , Stuart Maconie, Pete Brown, and people seem to appreciate mine.
